The Pros And Cons Of Student Credit Cards
There are only very few people who don’t have credit cards. Those who can testify of getting many unsolicited letters from dozens of credit card companies, each one promising to help you save money, if you would just get a credit card through them, are most people who are over 18.
Of course, credit cards are very convenient and there is no denying that fact. You don’t need to carry wads of cash around with you and you can pay for almost anything. Credit cards especially come in handy when you are a student. Extra course materials that you have to pay for or the science trip your professor organized are just some of the unexpected expenses that tend to come up all the time.
However, there is a danger that credit cards can be used in the wrong way and for the wrong things. Parents have a responsibility to educate their kids in the correct and responsible use of credit cards.
If a student finds himself in an unforeseen emergency of some sort, what would happen? If he has credit available, then what he can do is use the credit card to rescue himself. Adding a measure of control and security, especially for the student who may find himself short of cash at some point is when you put spending limits on your credit card.
Most card issuers are giving their customers 24 hour access to their accounts because of the advent of Internet banking. This means that one can easily check your balance which is an additional benefit. You can therefore curb your spending if you see that you have somewhat overspent.
If the parent want to keep student credit card spending in check, then another is by having the credit card in the name of the parents. The parents can then have better control over the spending habits of their children and they can for example set their own spending limits if they do this. They can punish their children by withholding funds for things they really want if they see that they are acting irresponsibly. This will add as a deterrent towards behaving irresponsibly and encourage responsible spending habits.
